BANGALORE: Chief Secretary P.B. Mahishi on Saturday said he had never sought to close down the website run by Jayashree Vijayakumar, wife of IAS officer M.N. Vijayakumar. In a clarification here on Saturday, Mr. Mahishi said the State Government had not written any letter to Ms. Vijayakumar till now. Her allegations that the Government was curtailing her freedom of speech and asking her to shut down her website were totally false and unfounded, Mr. Mahishi said. Ms. Vijayakumar had filed a complaint before the Karnataka State Commission for Women that she had received a letter from the Government asking her to close down the web portal, which, she said, had details of corruption in Mysore Lamp Works Ltd. Mr. Vijayakumar was the managing director of the company. She alleged that this was an infringement on her Right to Freedom of Speech as she had posted on the website the information obtained by her under the Right to Information Act. Mr. Mahishi said a letter was addressed to Mr. Vijayakumar asking him whether he agreed with the views expressed in the website. “Sri Vijaykumar has to either accept the views or disown the views and it is totally left to him. His wife’s liberty in using whatever language she wishes to use remains unquestioned and uncurtailed,” Mr. Mahishi said. In a related development, Mr. Mahishi and Additional Director (Commerce and Industry) A.K. Somanna, have placed their contentions before the Lokayukta on the two complaints filed by Mr. Vijaykumar. He had accused Mr. Mahishi, Principal Secretary (Commerce and Industry) K.M. Shivakumar and Mr. Somanna of corruption. Lokayukta N. Santosh Hegde said Mr. Shivakumar was yet to file his reply.
