THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The University of Kerala has issued show-cause notices to the Mary Matha College of Nursing, near Neyyattinkara, and the Lourde Matha College of Engineering, Kuttichal, preparatory to the cancellation of the affiliation of these colleges. A press note issued here by the university said the notices were issued because these colleges did not satisfy various conditions of the university and various national-level bodies. After receiving complaints about the lack of adequate infrastructure facilities and staff at various self-financing professional colleges, a team from the university conducted lightning inspections at various colleges. During these inspections, it was found that the Lourde Matha college did not have the required number of teachers and many departments did not have department heads. The college had only about half the number of computers stipulated for an engineering college. Similar shortcomings were noticed at the P.A. Aziz College of Engineering too. Earlier, following an inspection at the Mary Matha College of Nursing where it was found that the college did not have adequate facilities, the university gave strict instructions to the institution to rectify those shortcomings. The show-cause notice was now issued as it was found that the institution did not comply with the university’s directive. These decisions were taken at a meeting of the affiliation committee of the university’s Syndicate here on Saturday. It was also decided to impose a fine on Travancore Engineering College at Oyoor for conducting a laboratory examination in another institution without the necessary permission from the university. The university had recently issued a show-cause notice to Shahul Hameed memorial college after it was found that the college had allowed mass copying in one examination in an attempt to boost its results. Decision reversed
The press note issued by the university on Saturday evening was at variance with the decision announced at a press conference that morning by Vice-Chancellor M.K. Ramachandran Nair. At the press conference, Mr. Ramachandran Nair had announced that the university had cancelled the affiliation of the Mary Matha college. The university reversed its stand when it realised that a Single Bench of the Kerala High Court had, on June 21, ordered the varsity to maintain the status quo on the Mary Matha college as ordered by the court on June 14. In a press note issued here on Saturday evening, the Mary Matha Education Society said the university’s decision to cancel affiliation was a violation of the court order. However, the court order also notes, “…the order of status quo shall not stand in the way of issuing show cause notice to the petitioner (the college) and taking further proceedings with respect to the same.”
