Ship sinks, crew rescued
K. A. Martin
KOCHI: Fifteen crew members — 10 Albanians and five Indians — aboard a sinking Albanian vessel m.v. Maria S, were rescued by personnel of the Marine Department of the Cochin Port Trust at about 7.15 p.m.
on Saturday.
A spokesman for the Cochin Port Trust said the crew members were sent to the Port Trust Hospital for a general check-up. There were no injuries. Captain Subhash Kumar, Deputy Chairman of the Port Trust who oversaw the rescue operations said the rough seas had forced the vessel to halt its journey. The crew had found it difficult to pump out water. The Port Trust received a distress call at around 5 p.m.
The vessel, carrying 3,000 tonnes of steel billets and trucks was on a voyage from China to Albania. The ship sank at by about 6.20 p.m.
