NEW DELHI: The Centre of Sight Eye Hospital here has installed a corrective eye surgery machine that they claim is the first of its kind in South Asia. “IntraLase” is the latest development in Lasik (laser assisted in-situ keratomileusis), a surgical procedure wherein the cornea is reshaped with the help of a computer controlled laser beam to correct vision. Most common vision related problems like myopia (short-sightedness), hypermetropia (long-sightedness) and astigmatism arise from an improperly shaped cornea. “IntraLase Lasik” reshapes the surface of the cornea by use of pulsated rays of laser delivered at extremely short intervals (a quadrillionth of a second each), to a pre-programmed depth and position within the cornea. According to the Centre’s Medical Director, Mahipal H. Sachdev, the method is safer as it avoids a hand held instrument to create a corneal flap. The surgery takes about 20 seconds per eye with the entire procedure often completed in both eyes in 30 minutes.” “Traditional Lasik surgery in which incisions were made using a blade depended on the strength of the cornea. This blade-free technique is made for patients who have steep, flat or thin corneas and not suited for traditional Lasik surgery,” said Dr. Sachdev The procedure costs a fraction of what a similar surgery would cost in the United States. In order to be eligible for Lasik surgery patients must have healthy eyes and no cataracts.
