BANGALORE: Governor T.N. Chaturvedi said the press, which acts a watchdog of public interest, should maintain a constructive relationship with the Government and “not necessarily comfortable and cosy.”

Inaugurating the Press Day celebrations here on Sunday, Mr. Chaturvedi called upon journalists to focus more on issues concerning society, particularly in rural areas. As a watchdog of public interest, it was responsibility of the media to create awareness in society on issues that affect the daily life of the common people, he said.

In independent India, he said, all regions and languages had newspapers to respond to the aspirations of people. But it was better if the media focussed less on politics and more of social problems.

The Governor recalled the role played by the press in the freedom struggle.

Earlier, Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa said the relationship between the press and coalition Government in the State was a healthy one. There were 1,500 publications and 300 dailies in the State, he said.
