This Day That Age
A catastrophic depletion of fish resources in the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean is reported by the Fisheries Division of FAO, from Rome. Millions of fish are said to have perished through lack of oxygen. The dead fish are floating in the Arabian Sea mid-way between North Africa and India. According to information received from Moscow, based on reports from a Russian ship sailing through the Arabian Sea, there are about ten dead fish to the square metre and the area of mortality covers 200,000 square miles, says FAO’s oceanographer. He estimates that even if only one-tenth of the area reported were covered with dead fish, at such a density, the loss would total 20 million tons.
