India, Kuwait sort out aviation dispute

Atul Aneja

DUBAI: After three days of tough negotiations, India and Kuwait have ended their dispute over air traffic rights. Both sides decided that there would be no disruption in the flight services between the countries.

Kuwait had earlier threatened to bar Indian national carriers from operating in the country from Sunday, in the light of the dispute. The breakthrough in the talks was achieved when the two sides agreed to raise the capacity entitlements of each side from 8,320 to 12,000 seats per week.

India has also agreed to grant Kuwaiti carriers the right to operate from Hyderabad and Kolkata immediately. Besides, Kuwait carriers have been cleared for operating from Bangalore under the winter 2008 schedule.

However, the increase in traffic rights and capacity entitlements would apply only to the direct India-Kuwait market.

Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to the Air Services Agreement.
