‘No need for industry-farm conflict’

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: “There is no reason to believe that there is any conflict between industry and agriculture in the overall process of development,” External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee said on Sunday in an implicit reference to the debate raging in the State over the acquisition of farmland for industry.

Mr. Mukherjee was speaking at the unveiling of a statue of the former Chief Minister, Bidhan Chandra Roy, at the West Bengal Pradesh Congress office on the occasion of his 125th birth anniversary.

B.C. Roy’s role

Mr. Mukherjee recalled Roy’s role as the architect of modern West Bengal and his contribution not only to industrialisation but also to agricultural productivity.
