Jnanpith laureate M.T. Vasudevan Nair believes the media should give a much better coverage for real issues of women. Launching the Kerala edition of Mayoori - Women, a magazine for women that was being published from Dubai the last two years, Mr. Vasudevan Nair remarked at the function at Press Club on Saturday it was ironic that female foeticide was rampant even in backward villages where “people have received as gifts colour TV sets.” “This means there is considerable space left for magazines which treat serious issues concerning women though there is no dearth of Malayalam magazines exclusively for women,” Mr. Vasudevan Nair remarked. He said women’s interests were not confined to cosmetics though that was the impression some glossy magazines gave. “Law and ecology have become subjects of immediate concern to modern women,” he said Author Sara Joseph who is Chief Editor of the magazine said one question that had to be addressed was who should decide what women should read. She said environmental issues, like the one thrown up by Pathrakadavu project, were matters of direct relevance to women. Ms. Joseph pointed out that women had all along been active participants in debates on sensitive issues like chastity. Malayalam literature bears testimony to this. “Such eloquent and forceful debates should continue,” she said. R. Madhavan Nair
