KOCHI: Close on the heels of Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Ramesh Chennithala’s call for a CBI probe into the Desabhimani affair, United Democratic Front (UDF) convener P.P. Thankachan on Monday urged the Government to ask the CBI to investigate the Rs.2-crore scandal. Going a step further, Mr. Thankachan, at a news conference here, called for a vigilance inquiry into the alleged taking of bribe of Rs.1 crore by Desabhimani’s deputy general manager K. Venugopal who has now been ousted from the Communist Party of India (Marxist). He said senior CPI(M) leaders were involved in the Venugopal affair and that questioning by the vigilance would reveal who were involved. The CPI(M)’s decision to return the tainted money received by the Desabhimani would not wash off the crime. “Returning the booty will not erase the theft,” he remarked. He alleged that the Rs. 2 crore paid to Desabhimani was neither a bond nor a loan. Rather, it was a payment made to avoid action to recover the Rs. 800 crore the ‘lottery king’ owed the Government in taxes. He wondered why the CPI(M) did not punish Desabhimani’s general manager and party leader E.P. Jayarajan in the Rs. 2-crore affair, while the DGM was sacked from the party for accepting a smaller sum of money. Mr. Thankachan sought the Chief Minister’s intervention in the Desabhimani episode. KSU’s protest
He said the KSU would take out a march to the Secretariat on Wednesday to seek investigation into the Desabhimani affair. On July 4, the UDF’s constituents would launch a campaign too.
