This Day That Age
The Union Law Minister, Mr. A.K. Sen, told a press conference in Calcutta on July 1 that the Government would shortly introduce legislation to “limit” adjournments in all courts and tribunals in the country. He, however, added that they could not lay down any particular rule regarding adjournment of cases as obviously there would come times when this became unavoidable and to bar this would be a travesty of justice. About the economy drive in his Ministry, Mr. Sen said he had instructed courts all over India to submit information about the total cases of litigation involving the Government and increase in the expenditure which had been “beyond imagination”. He proposed to take steps to reduce the time now taken for disposal of cases and he hoped to be able to do all these within one year. In the meantime he was requesting advocates to accept lower fees when appearing for the Government and the response in Calcutta had been favourable.
