dated July 3, 1957: Postal Gift Coupons

The Union Home Minister, Pandit Pant, inaugurated at the General Post Office in New Delhi on July 1 the Postal Gift Coupons Scheme, started to give a fillip to the national savings drive. He purchased three gift coupons of the value of Rs.110 from Mr. Lal Bahadur Shastri, Communications Minister, across the counter of the Post Office where Mr. Shastri played the role of a postal clerk. Intended to take the place of customary presents of cash and consumption articles on auspicious occasions such as marriages and birthdays, these coupons can be exchanged for National Savings Certificates by the donee.
