service affected: Commuters at Korattur station protesting against the cancellation of a train service on Monday.

CHENNAI: For the second time in seven days, suburban train services were disrupted due to protests. On Monday, it was an agitation by commuters at the Korattur station over the rescheduling of the EMU services between Avadi and Chennai Beach, affecting train traffic for over 30 minutes.

(Last Tuesday, services on the Chennai-Arakkonam and Chennai-Gummidipoondi sections were affected following a strike by motormen.)

Irked by the cancellation of an EMU service between Avadi and Chennai Beach, several commuters squatted on the track demanding its resumption. The service, with a halt at the Korattur station at around 9 a.m., was terminated on Monday without prior announcement, much to the inconvenience of office goers and school students, they charged. The next train in the route was only at 10.30 a.m, a commuter complained.

Sources in Ambattur police said about 400 commuters protested.
