Arrack crackdown fuels IMFL sales
Special Correspondent
VILLUPURAM: After a gap of six months, Villupuram district has attained the top slot in the sale of Indian Made Foreign Liquor through the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation outlets.
This could be possible owing to the tight vigil kept on the illicit arrack distillation and trade, according to K.Periaiah, Superintendent of Police.
The SP told presspersons here on Monday that the IMFL sales in the district had exceeded the target, by registering a sale of 104.09 per cent during June.
Earlier, the district was in the 29th place in IMFL sales, he said.
Special wings
Mr. Periaiah said special wings had been formed in the seven sub-divisions of the district to track down the arrack peddlers.
In the last month ending June 30, the personnel of these wings had booked 546 prohibition offensive cases, and the police had booked another 911 cases.
A total of 1,097 persons, including 973 men and 124 women involved in the illegal trade, had been rounded up.
