Staff Correspondent

A farmer died in wall collapse at Handli village

Several waterfalls in the mountains come alive

NAVIGATING: People walking on a small bridge at Betri, 20 km from Madikeri, on the Madikeri-Virajpet road even as the Cauvery continues to rise on Monday.

Madikeri: Heavy rainfall occurring in Kodagu district slackened on Monday even as the Cauvery and its tributaries flowed close to the danger mark in the district. Rain claimed life of a farmer at Handli in Somwarpet taluk of the district when a wall of his house collapsed on Sunday. He was identified as Dharmappa (58).

Cauvery waters have submerged vast extent of paddy fields in and around Bhagamandala in Madikeri taluk and Begurkolli area in Virajpet taluk, according to reports received here. Landslides occurred in Talacauvery, Bhagamandala, Karike and Chettimani areas because of heavy rain in the last 48 hours.

A few houses were buried under the rubble when landslips occurred at Mangaladevinagar, Indiranagar, and Chamundeshwarinagar localities in the city here. A girl was rescued by neighbours when she was trapped inside a house. Telephone connections snapped in many parts, especially rural areas of the district and power supply could not be restored. Power supply in Madikeri city, which went off on Sunday, was restored on Monday afternoon but remained unstable.

Several waterfalls cascading down the rocky cliff of mountains have sprung back to life on the Bhagamandala-Karike road, Siddapur-Chettalli road. Water level at the Sangam in Bhagamadala is receding.

Cauvery level almost touched the height of the new bridge at Balamuri while water entered the steps of a “Dhavasa Bhandara” building situated upwards the course of the river.

The Betri-Viajpet road link was cut off because of the Cauvery overflowing at Betri on Monday. Bengur turned into an island near Cherambane, on Madikeri-Bhagamandala road on Sunday.

In the last 24 hours (8 a.m. on Sunday to 8 a.m. on Monday), Talacauvery received 193 mm rainfall, Bhagamandala 156 mm, Ponnampet 150 mm, Gonicoppa 122 mm, Srimangala 120 mm, Kutta 95 mm, Napoklu 79 mm, Virajpet, Madikeri and Siddapur 70.2 mm each.

The water level at Harangi reservoir has touched 2,849 feet as on Monday as against its maximum level of 2,859 feet. Inflow was measured at 5,043 cusecs.
