Marching for justice: Villagers returning after submitting a petition to the officials at the Collectorate in Salem on Monday. —
SALEM: Residents of three villages in Taramangalam panchayat union have urged the district administration to remove the encroachments on the lake in Alagusamudram village. They claimed that a few persons encroached the lakebed, poramboke lands and a part of the burial ground, located near the lake, and built houses. As a result, the channels carrying water to the lake were blocked and the water body remained dry, which affected a large number of farmers in Alagusamudram, Maramangalauthupatti and Keerapapampadi villages. The district administration had not taken any steps to remove the encroachments so far. But the administration had reportedly taken steps to provide free house pattas to those who had encroached the lake and the nearby poramboke lands, they said. The administration should drop its move to provide free house sites. It should take immediate steps to remove the encroachments, villagers demanded. Strengthening bunds
Efforts should also be made to remove the silt and strengthen the bunds of the lake. These measures would benefit a large number of farmers, they said and submitted a petition in this regard to the officials at the Collectorate here on Monday.
