KADAPA: Venkatapathi, a Dalit, who attempted suicide three days ago, owing to alleged police highhandedness, died while undergoing treatment at RIMS Hospital here on Monday. Venkatapathi of Vanthatipalle Dalitwada in Siddhavatam mandal had consumed pesticide a day after Siddhavatam Sub-Inspector Sankaraiah thrashed him in the police station and forced him to apologise before the people of the area and touch the feet of a neighbour Subhadramma, who complained that he had abused her. Collector gheraoed
Alleging that the Dalit ended his life on being insulted by the SI, who beat him up without formally enquiring into a neighbour’s complaint, MRPS functionaries and his relatives gheraoed District Collector M.T. Krishna Babu when he visited RIMS. The wife of the deceased man, Kondamma, told the Collector that her husband consumed pesticide as the SI forced him to touch the feet of a woman in the neighbourhood, who had filed a false complaint. MRPS leader Subbaiah sought action against Siddhavatam Sub-Inspector and payment of ex gratia to the widow of the suicide victim. He charged Mr. Sankaraiah with ill-treating Dalits. The Collector assured to order an enquiry. Vontimitta Circle Inspector Venkataramana said a report would be sent to senior officials following an enquiry into the charges.
