Muzaffarnagar: A special CBI court here on Monday acquitted a senior IPS officer in connection with alleged police firing on Uttarakhand activists here in 1994, refusing the agency permission to prosecute him without the Uttar Pradesh Governor’s consent. Designated CBI Judge Piyush Pandey acquitted Rajendra Pal Singh, who was posted as city Superintendent of Police when the incident took place at Rampur Tiraha on October 2, 1994. Mr. Singh, who is currently Deputy Inspector-General of Police (PAC) of Bareilly sector, was charge-sheeted by the CBI for conspiracy in the case and tampering of police records. The court also rejected the CBI contention that consent of the Governor was not required as tampering of police records did not come in the line of duty. The CBI last year sought permission from the UP Government to prosecute the DIG but the plea was turned down.
