CHENNAI: False and baseless. This was how the Presidential candidate of the United Progressive Alliance-Left, Pratibha Patil, on Sunday described the allegations made against her. “Despite all the attempts to tarnish my image, I remain steadfast in my commitment to serve my countrymen and women in the highest and the most noble traditions of our democracy and I will continue to serve the nation with humility and with a deep sense of duty,” Ms Patil said, participating in a dinner hosted by Chief Minister and president of the Democratic Progressive Alliance M. Karunanidhi here. Sounding confident of success, she said her election would be a victory for the millions of citizens. “We are an ancient civilisation, but a young nation. As we try to modernise the world’s largest democracy, the Indian Constitution is the foundation of our socio-economic development.” On the reports in a section of the press that some parties were planning to boycott the election, Mr. Karunanidhi said if that happened, it would send out a message that all electors of the State had unanimously voted for Ms. Patil. However, he would appeal to those who were planning to stay away the election to participate in the poll and ensure a “magnificent victory” for her.
