KURNOOL: Minister for Roads and Buildings T. Jeevan Reddy on Monday reviewed the damage caused to road network in the district by the floods. Collector M. Dana Kishore, Mayor S. Raghuram Reddy, Member of Parliament Kotla Jayasuryaprakasa Reddy, ZP Chairman L. Venkata Swamy and MLAs --E. Pratap Reddy, Y. Kesava Reddy, Kotla Sujathamma and Gouru Charita --were present. The Minister announced short-term and long-term measures to repair the roads. He promised to take up outer ring road (ORR) at Kurnool to bypass the traffic on NH 7 and NH 18. The MP and the Mayor insisted that the ring road should be constructed in such a way that the traffic on the national highways should be away from the city limits. According to them, National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) authorities were trying to construct the road at the shortest distance possible. Mr. Jeevan Reddy said the State Government had little role in the construction of national highways except representing the matter to the Centre and sought for the cooperation of the MP to take up the matter with the Centre. The public representatives asked for a flyover at Anand theatre in the city to avoid Hundri flood. 72 breaches
The Minister said the bridge across Tungabhadra at Gondiparla was under serious consideration, which could be integrated into the proposed ORR. Mr. Jeevan Reddy said the loss to R and B on account of floods was Rs 90 crore in the district. The roads breached at 72 places and 59 of them were closed. The work was in progress at the remaining places. The MLAs drew the attention of the Minister to the Kurnool-Guntur Road, which could not be widened between Atmakur and Dornala because of forest restrictions. The Minister and MLAs decided to represent the matter to the Centre.
