Agreement on 50:50 seat split

Staff Reporter

Thiruvananthapuram: Following talks with the Government on Monday, the association of managements of self-financing engineering colleges has agreed to a 50:50 seat split in the colleges under it.

For the government seats, the annual fee will be Rs.15,450. There will be a refundable deposit of Rs.1.5 lakh and a caution deposit of Rs.10,000. The admissions to these seats will be from the rank list prepared by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations and will be done in compliance with reservation norms.

In 35 per cent of the management seats, the minimum fee will be Rs.38,700 and the maximum fee, Rs.90,000. In these seats also admissions will be made from the CEE’s rank list. In the remaining 15 per cent seats (NRI quota), the maximum fee will be Rs.1.5 lakh and the managements will be free to admit candidates as they choose. In these last two categories of seats a caution deposit of Rs.10,000 will be levied. An agreement to this effect is expected to be signed on Tuesday.

Deposit for the poor

Education Minister M.A. Baby told mediapersons after the discussions that the managements had agreed to consider reducing the deposit amount for students from poor families. With this agreement, a majority of managements of professional colleges have come to an understanding with the Government, Mr. Baby said.

“I appeal to all managements who have stayed away to come forward and sign agreements with the Government,” he said.

All pacts signed with various managements will be submitted to the P.A. Mohammed committee for its approval, he added.
