Not all railway stations have public toilets though they are mandatory. In stations where toilets do exist, the facilities are barely sufficient, access is very poor or the toilets have not made been functional years after being built.

Southern Railway should also consider introducing coaches with attached toilets in long-distance suburban electric trains to destinations like Tirumalpur as the journey time is close to three hours. Such facilities existed on Diesel Multiple Services between Arakkonam and Chengalpattu.
