HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Monday agreed to permit promotions in the Irrigation Department. As a consequence, orders for filling the vacant posts of executive engineers, SEs and CEs and also promotions are to be issued shortly. These decisions were taken by Dr. Reddy at a meeting to review the modernisation of the Krishna-Godavari delta and Polavaram project work. According to an official release, the Chief Minister directed officials to prepare schemes costing Rs.4,000 crore to modernise on a permanent basis the KG Delta so that it could receive excess rainfall. He said the modernisation works should be completed in three years. The tender process should be finalised by September 15 and works launched in February next year. The expert committee appointed to go into the issue of modernisation had submitted its report. Dr. Reddy issued the directive after holding discussions with the experts. Rockfill dam
With regard to the Polavaram project, the Chief Minister wanted work on the Rockfill Dam to be launched shortly. He appealed to all to avoid giving a twist to the court ruling on Polavaram. He said the court had not faulted taking up of the work but directed payment of compensation even before water enters villages. This process had begun, the release quoted him as saying.
