CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Monday announced a slew of welfare measures for the workforce of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board on the occasion of its golden jubilee celebration.

An additional increment as incentive would be given to 72, 723 employees, involving an expenditure of Rs. 29.87 crore annually. A token amount of Rs. 1,000 would be paid to all the employees, 46,035 pensioners and 27,055 family pensioners. This would amount to Rs. 14.58 crore. About 21,400 contract workers and 5,646 part-time workers would get Rs. 500 each and this would cost Rs. 1.36 crore to the Board.

Addressing a function held at Nehru Indoor Stadium that was swarmed with the employees and their family members, Mr. Karunanidhi said the question of pension hike would be taken up at the time of the formation of the Pay Commission.

The Chief Minister advised the TNEB staff to ensure uninterrupted and quality power supply. He laid the foundation stone for power projects of 2,500 megawatt capacity and dedicated 10,000 distribution transformers.

The Government decided to establish the transformers at a cost of Rs. 160 crore, he said.

Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veerasamy, who presided over the function, said regularisation of the services of about 21,400 contract workers in distribution circles would be carried out in a phased manner.

He laid the foundation stone for the golden jubilee block. M.K. Stalin, Local Administration Minister, released a souvenir.

About two dozen employees and several former chairmen of the Board were honoured on the occasion. The loudest cheers were reserved for B. Vijayaraghavan and R. Poornalingam, who headed the TNEB. Mr Karunanidhi commended the role of V. Appadurai, who played a crucial role in the formative years of the Board and presented a medal to his son, V.A. Subramanian. Chief Secreatary L.K. Tripathy, TNEB Chairman Hans Raj Verma, Principal Energy Secretary R. Satapathy and Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission S. Kabilan took part in the function.
