Activists ‘weigh’ vegetables using currency notes

CAUSE FOR CONCERN: AIDWA activists ‘selling’ vegetables during their novel protest in Anantapur on Monday.
ANANTAPUR: Activists of All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) staged a novel protest in front of the Tahsildar’s office here on Monday demanding market intervention by the Government to bring down the skyrocketing prices of vegetables.
After reaching Tahsildar’s office in a procession the AIDWA activists ‘sold’ vegetables weighing them with a bundle of currency notes on a balance, indicating that vegetables had gone out of the reach of poor due to unprecedented hike in the prices for the last fortnight.
Speaking at the protest AIDWA leaders V. Savithri and D. Dilshad said the prices of vegetables had gone up during the last 20 days. Even the middle class families were struggling to purchase vegetables.
They said tomatoes were being sold at Rs. 32 per kg, carrot at Rs. 28, onion at Rs. 25, green chilli at Rs. 20 and potatoes at Rs. 16 per kg. It was unfortunate that the Government was not taking measures to bring down the prices, they said.
