TN regains title

Madurai: Tamil Nadu regained the overall championship title in the two-day 7th National Federation cup junior athletics championship organised by Madurai District Athletic Association under the auspices of TNAA at the Police Centenary Stadium here on Monday.

Tamil Nadu won 13 gold, 14 silver and 7 bronze medals, as against the defending champion, Kerala, which finished runner-up with 5 gold, 6 silver and 4 bronze medals. This was the fifth overall title victory for Tamil Nadu. Amardeep Singh of Punjab and Gayathiri of Tamil Nadu were adjudged the best athletes in the boys and girls sections respectively.

Unlike the opening day, in which Tamil Nadu athletes dominated the proceedings, the second and final day saw the athletes from other States also giving their best performances. The results: Boys: 200m: 1. Maninder Singh (Punjab) 22. 2s; 2. Hemant Kirulkar (TN); 3. S. Sathya (TN). 800m: 1. Baljit Yadav (Haryana) 1:58.9s; 2. Ajay Yadav (Jharkhand); 3. Ibrar Ahmed (UP). 400m hurdles: 1. Shejil Varghese (Kerala) 54s; 2. T. Balamurugan (TN); 3. Parve en Kumar (Haryana). 3,000m: 1. Jai Prakash (Jharkhand) 9:14.4s; 2. B. Rakesh (Karnataka); 3. Vikas Mohite (Maharashtra). 5,000m: 1. B. Ezhilnilavan (TN) 15:45.7s; 2. Sandeep Yadav (UP); 3. Anand Kujur (Jharkhand). 10,000m walk: 1. Amrit Kumar (Punjab) 51:16.4s; 2. Pradeep (Haryana); 3. Arun Lamba (Rajasthan). Long Jump: 1. Anoopp (Kerala) 7.32m; 2. R.S. Bijil (TN); 3. D. Suresh Babu (TN). High Jump: 1. Kamalji t Singh (Jharkhand) 2.05m; 2. Jithin C. Thomas (Kerala); 3. Abhishek Roy (WB). Pole Vault: 1. Awadhesh Kumar Yadav (UP) 4m; 2. K. Rajesh (TN); 3. Dhaneesh Stephen (Kerala). Shot Put: 1. Rajinder Kumar (Punjab) 17.30 m; 2. Jagbir Singh (Haryana); 3. Baljinder Singh (Maharashtra). Hammer: 1. Amit Kumar (UP) 59.50m; 2. Rama Shanker Yadav (UP); 3. Shankar Poonia (Gujarat). 4x400m: 1. Tamil Nadu 3:27.2s; 2. Kerala; 3. Andhra Pradesh.
