Officials told to meet housing target

Mangalore: Taking serious objection to inability of officials concerned to meet the targets set for Ashraya housing scheme for rural poor in Mangalore taluk, the Mulki-Moodbidri MLA K. Abhayachandra Jain on Monday directed them to meet the target, immediately. Mr. Jain directed Mangalore tahshildar K.B. Ramachandra to instruct secretaries of gram panchayats and village assistants to take steps in this regard.

Presiding over the quarterly progress review meeting of Karnataka Development Programme of Mangalore taluk, Mr. Jain said the Government had proposed to construct at least 60 Ashraya houses in each gram panchayat limits. The actual number did not exceed 15 in each gram panchayat which is a serious lapse, he observed. Stating that he had taken up the issue of delay with the officials of Rajiv Gandhi Housing Corporation, the nodal agency for constructing houses under the scheme, Mr. Jain instructed the officials to clearly demarcate the sites for the purpose. When Mr. Ramachandra said unauthorised persons had occupied some Ashraya houses, Mr. Jain asked the officials to initiate action against such persons as per law. On lack of public awareness on “nemmadi” centres, Mr. Jain said it was defeating the very purpose for which these centres were set up.

Most people still approach the taluk office to obtain “pahani”.

The Government should set up more “bhoomi kendras” at “nada kacheris” he said and instructed the tahshildar to verify if all nemmadi centres in Mangalore were functioning.

Referring to the threat of chikungunya, the MLA instructed taluk health authorities to take precautions to prevent its outbreak. Mr. Jain also instructed the revenue authorities to set aside land for crematoriums in each village.
