Fine Craftsmanship: An exhibit at the Orissa Crafts Utsav at the Ernakulam Women’s Association Hall in Kochi.
Orissa Crafts Utsav opened at Ernakulam Women’s Association Hall here on Tuesday. Handlooms – both cotton and silk – and Handicrafts – appliqué work, brass/ dhokra casting, Patachitra painting from Orissa are the hightlights at the show. Other display items include Gujarat bedspreads, Phulkari saris, dress materials, Kantha saris, Kashmiri dress materials, leather products, terra cotta items and semi precious stones. The cotton handlooms stand out for its sheer beauty. The artisans call it ‘Ikat’ patterning which is done by first dyeing the threads according to the pattern layout and as the sari is woven , the pattern emerges. It has a jagged look and makes the Ikat stand out. To add to the charm is the broad temple style borders and geometric figures. Orissa Bomkai saris feature threadwork ornamental borders and ‘pallu’ with touches of Ikat work. These bring a tribal look in the background of a colourful palette. The show will be on from 10 a.m. to 9.30 p.m. till July 15. K. Venkiteswaran
