KOCHI: Kerala is entering a new era in power generation with two private companies getting the green signal for generating power from wind. The projects are to be set up at Ramakkalmedu in Idukki and the Palakkad gap. The power generated can be bought by the State Electricity Board and will provide some relief to the power-deficit State. The Chennai-based Centre for Wind Energy Technology had conducted studies on the prospects of setting up wind energy projects in the State and had concluded that several locations were suitable for it. Earlier, a study conducted by Agency for Non-Conventional Energy and Rural Technology (ANERT) at 21 sites had found 16 sites suitable for setting up wind energy projects. The initial projects are to be set up by Vestas and Suzlon, two well-known companies engaged in setting up wind farms in different parts of the country. The advanced models of wind turbines and the computerised associated systems are capable of exploiting the wind potential to the maximum, says Ramesh Kymal of Vestas.
