Bihar plans insurance for police

Specially in Naxal-hit areas

“We would provide them insurance cover of Rs 10 lakh”

“In the process of negotiating with insurance companies”

Patna: Apart from paying Rs 10 lakh as compensation to the kin of policemen killed in violence by Naxalites, the Bihar Government is considering providing insurance cover for the same amount to personnel deployed in districts where Maoists are active.

“A large number of our personnel work in high-risk situations in various Naxalite-affected districts. We have decided to provide them insurance cover of Rs 10 lakh to enable them to work in a more focused way to combat the menace without having to worry about their families back home,” Inspector General (headquarters) Anil Sinha told PTI.

“We are in the process of negotiating with various insurance companies, including GIC, NIC and LIC, to finalise terms and conditions for the insurance scheme,” he said.

The State Government has convened a high-level meeting here tomorrow to finalise a strategy to counter violence by Naxalites in view of recent attacks by the banned CPI-Maoist on police. Nine persons, including five policemen, were killed on Saturday in an attack by the group on the Rajpur police station and Baghaila outpost in Rohtas district. The meeting, to be presided over by Chief Secretary A. K. Choudhary, is likely to be attended by Director General of Police A. R. Sinha and senior officials of police and Central intelligence agencies.

Principal Secretary (Home) Afzal Amanullah has said the State has sent a detailed report to the Centre about recent Naxalite attacks and sought 10 more companies of paramilitary forces. -- PTI
