PASS PROBLEMS: The students from different schools under the banner of the Students Federation of India staging a demonstration in front of the North Eastern Karnataka Road Transport Corporation in Gulbarga on Tuesday protesting against the increase in the rates of the concessional bus pass given to students.
GULBARGA: Schoolchildren and college students in the city on Tuesday boycotted classes and took out a procession and staged a demonstration in front of the administrative office of the North Eastern Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NEKRTC) and burnt an effigy of Transport Minister N. Cheluvarayaswamy demanding the withdrawal of the decision to increase the student bus pass rate. The protest was led by the Students Federation of India and many girl students participated in the demonstration in front of the administrative office of the NEKRTC. In a memorandum to the Minister and submitted to NEKRTC authorities, the SFI said the decision of the Government to increase the bus pass rate for the primary school children from Rs. 80 to Rs. 130, for high school students from Rs. 410 to Rs. 575, Rs. 720 to Rs. 920 for college students and Rs. 1,140 for students pursuing professional courses was harsh on particularly those coming from the poor families in rural areas. The memorandum said students, who were the victims of donation menace and fee increase in schools and colleges, were burdened by the decision of the Government to increase the bus pass rate. The students blocked the main road for more than two hours and raised slogans against the Government. SFI president Sharanappa Saidapur and secretary Sunil Manpade said that the agitation launched by the SFI throughout the State would not be withdrawn till the Government retraced its step and restored the old bus pass rate.
