PUDUKOTTAI: In a surprise raid on a couple of fair price shops at Athur and Sundaram villages near Tirumayanam on Tuesday, the flying squad of the Revenue Department detected irregularities to the tune of Rs. 42,000. The irregularities included bogus billing and under-stock of 1,713 kg of rice and other essential commodities meant for public distribution. The District Supply Officer P. Subramanian, who led the raid, said that the Regional Joint Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Pudukottai, had been asked to initiate action against the salesperson, A. Mahendrran. Dies of burns
A 31-year-old Sri Lankan accommodated at the refugees camp in Thoppukollai near Alankudi in the district died of burns at the Annal Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital in Tiruchi on Monday. The police gave her name as Sandhiya Raajini of Mannar in Sri Lanka. She sustained burns after her sari caught fire while cooking at the camp on June 24. She was rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital in Pudukottai, from where she was referred to the Annal Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital in Tiruchi. The Alankudi police have registered a case.
