3 arrested for murder of couple

Karnal: Police have arrested three persons in connection with the murder of a couple who got married against the wishes of their parents and community members who objected to their alliance since they belong to the same ‘gotra’ (lineage).

The couple, Manoj and Babli, were allegedly done to death on June 16, an action justified by the khap (community) panchayat. Those arrested include the girl’s uncle Rajinder Singh, police said.

The bodies of Manoj and Babli of Karoran village, who got married on May 18 against the wishes of their parents and community members, were recovered from a canal near Narnaund in Hisar district. A complaint regarding Babli’s kidnapping was registered at Butana police chowki by her mother.

A khap panchayat at Kaithal had earlier given a call for social boycott of the family after the couple decided to tie the knot. -- PTI
