12 shops gutted in Tirunallar
Special Correspondent
KARAIKAL: Nearly a dozen shops were destroyed in a fire that broke out in the temple town of Tirunallar in Karaikal district of the Union Territory of Puducherry on Monday.
The total loss is estimated at several lakhs of rupees and the cause of the fire is being investigated. No one was injured in the accident.
Local merchants and people in the locality resorted to a road roko as the fire service vehicle that used to be stationed near the Tirunallar temple did not come in time to put out the fire.
It is stated that the fire tender vehicle had gone to Karaikal at the time of the fire accident for changing the vehicle.
When a fire service vehicle came to put out the fire after it was extinguished by the local people, a group of people allegedly attacked the vehicle injuring four service personnel, who were admitted to Government Hospital in Karaikal.
Revenue and police officials rushed to the spot and maintained law and order at Tirunallar in the night.
