Major fire mishap reduces scrap godown to ashes

Heavy loss: A fireman putting out fire in a scrap godown at Anantapur on Tuesday.

ANANTAPUR: A major fire mishap occurred in the godown of a scrap dealer in the industrial estate here in the wee hours of Tuesday causing a huge financial loss to the trader.

However, there was no loss of life and nobody was injured. The loss was estimated to be Rs. 50 lakh, but the trader was putting the loss at Rs. 2-3 crore.

According to police, the fire broke out in the scrap godown belonging to one Hydervali possibly due to electrical short circuit around 12.30 a.m. and it was noticed by a police patrolling party around 1 a.m. Police immediately alerted the Fire Service Department and a fire extinguisher rushed to the site immediately.

As the scrap contained, huge heaps of plastic, paper, fibre and glass material besides iron, the fire spread to the entire godown within no time with the help of heavy winds blowing during the night.

It was very difficult for the firemen to bring the fire under control and they were struggling to put it off completely till the evening, even with the help of six fire tenders.

Probe ordered

The Fire Services Department also ordered a probe into the mishap as the dealer was putting the loss very high. Police said foul play could not be ruled out in such incidents.
