HYDERABAD: With heavy inflows in the wake of heavy rain in Maharashtra and Orissa, both the Krishna and Godavari are on the rise in Andhra Pradesh. The Karnataka Government has opened the floodgates of Alamatti as well as Narayanpur dams, as they are full leading to a huge inflow of over 3 lakh cusecs into Andhra Pradesh where the gates of the Jurala project have already been lifted. As a result, the Srisailam dam has greatly improved its storage. About 70,000 cusecs of water has been released through power generation at its hydel stations on the right and left banks. On Tuesday, the level in the dam touched 868 ft against its full reservoir level of 885 ft. On the other hand, it may take some more time for a significant improvement in the reservoir level in the Nagarjunsagar. At present, it is mainly receiving inflows only from Srisailam but none from the intermediate catchment. Godavari is rising steadily at the temple town of Bhadrachalam as its tributaries, Sabari and Indravathi, are in spate. If the flood continues, the Godavari may touch the first warning level of 43 ft in a couple of days.
