They hold talks with Mayor and Commissioner R. Arivudainambi denies charges
TIRUCHI: About 150 sanitary workers of the K. Abishekapuram zone of the Tiruchi Corporation resorted to a flash strike on Tuesday protesting the alleged use of ‘abusive language’ by the zone chairman R. Arivudainambi (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam). The workers, who represented the matter to the Collector, Ashish Vachhani, and the Mayor, Sarubala R.Tondaiman, on Monday, abstained from work this morning and assembled at the Corporation office demanding action against the chairman. “Not given leave”
They alleged that they were being asked to report at the house of Mr. Arivudainambi and not being sanctioned leave. They levelled various other charges against him. Representatives of the workers later held talks with the Mayor and Commissioner B.Balachandran. Officials told the workers that attendance would be taken only at the ward offices and they could represent any grievance to the Assistant Commissioner or the Commissioner. Leaders of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) and the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) participated in the talks. The sanitary workers resumed duty by afternoon accepting the assurances given by the officials. When contacted, Mr.Arivudainambi, who has recently launched a mass cleaning campaign in the zone, denied the charges. He stated that workers were being instigated against him as he had made the recently regularised sanitary workers to work during the afternoons also. The mass cleaning and desilting of the drains in the zone has been widely welcomed. Besides, he had objected to some workers being absent on Saturday.
