Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan’s high profile visit to Munnar on Tuesday seems to have rekindled public interest in the controversial eviction process at the hill resort. The television images of the Chief Minister presiding over the takeover of 1,300 acres of encroached Government land in Munnar seems to have added more shine to his popular image. The octogenarian Chief Minister was apparently unmindful of the cold an d windy weather in Munnar. He wore a quaint woollen cap and a jacket to beat the cold. His outfit was a fond topic of conversation at public circuits in the city. In Munnar, the Chief Minister had a word of caution for mediapersons covering the eviction drive. He requested journalists not to demoralise the eviction team by reporting that the Government’s drive was loosing steam. He said more surveyors would be send to Munnar to accurately evaluate the scale of encroachments. He promised that the Government would protect the interests of poor people and would not take any step to dispossess them of the land in their possession. G. Anand
