VOLLEYBALL: Team from Hong Kong practicing on the banks of Hussainsagar on Tuesday.
HYDERABAD: Beach volleyball in the heart of the city! Seems implausible but it has been happening for quite sometime with the A.P. Volleyball Association conducting such tournaments on the banks of River Musi at the Victory Playground. And when the A.P Beach Volleyball Players Club decided to take up the task of hosting the Asian Circuit Championship from Wednesday on Necklace Road, it was to popularise the sport by taking it closer to the crowds turning up on the stretch. “We believe this is the best location to popularise beach volleyball. People can just walk into the venue and get a feel of the sport,” says president of the Club and former captain V. Ravikanth Reddy. To ensure that the ambience is near-perfect beside the Hussain Sagar Lake, the hosts have taken pains to set up three courts, including two floodlit ones to lure the crowds. We are expecting good crowds and we are trying our best to popularise it,” beams Raj Kumar, another ex-international and organising secretary. The practice sessions have already been attracting people and more are expected as the foreign teams have landed up on Tuesday. Labour Minister G. Vinod is the chief patron for the event and is mobilising support for the event.
