KORAPUT: Nine labourers who have been sent to Tamil Nadu to work at a construction site are being put to untold hardship, alleges Bijay Kulasika. Bijay was one of the 11 members from Lachmani village of Goudaguda panchayat near Kakirigumma in the district who was sent to Tamil Nadu allegedly by two agents of the construction company – Uma Nayak and Basant Swain. Bijay said that they were initially stationed in Perugutur near Chennai for 36 days during the first phase of the work and then shifted to Kalambakkam. Alleging that the company was not paying the labourers the promised amount and not giving them enough food, Bijay said that he and another labourer Bidya Saunta had to escape. Bijay further said that when he sought the help of the Kakirigumma police in rescuing the fellow villagers, he was allegedly beaten up. However, the Kakirigumma police denied the charge and said that Bijay had approached them anticipating threat from the agents and that they had nothing to do in this issue as the case was in the labour court.
