Community policing might not click in State, says Chandy

Staff Reporter

Alappuzha: Leader of Opposition Oommen Chandy has said that the community policing initiative proposed by the Left Democratic Front (LDF) had little chance of becoming successful in Kerala.

“The concept was a success in western countries, but in Kerala, I doubt whether that sort of success will be repeated. The reason is nothing but political interference in the day to day functioning of the police here,” he told reporters at the District Congress Committee office here on Tuesday.

‘Politicising ordinance’

Recalling that the United Democratic Government was the first to bring the Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act, popular as the Goonda Act, into force, Mr. Chandy alleged that the LDF had amended that Act only to politicise it.

“Unless excess political interference is stopped, the police will not be able to function with such new concepts,” he added.
