Ali-Bin-Sayeed Aiffian
HYDERABAD: The city police on Tuesday arrested a Hyderabadi, Ali-Bin-Sayeed Aiffian alias Ali Baba for allegedly trying to extort money from rich businessmen with the help of underworld gangs operating from Dubai. A resident of Salal Barkas, Baba was arrested on charge of killing his younger brother two years ago. After being released on bail, he flew to Dubai in search of job in 2006 and came in contact with mafia don Dawood Ibrahim’s associates Saleem and Mazhar. Commissioner’s Task Force DCP B. Kamalasan Reddy told a press conference that Ibrahim’s associates planned to extort money from rich people and sent Baba to India to collect details of possible targets. On his return, the accused began gathering phone numbers and addresses of wealthy industrialists and traders and sent the same to his accomplices in Dubai. Chermas, Abids, showroom owner Pestonji, Jai Prakash Singh, director of Sujatha High School, M.A. Khan, managing director of Power Max Generators were among those whose details were passed onto the underworld gang. Claiming himself as member of underworld gang, he threatened Mr. Khan over phone to pay money. Mr. Khan lodged a complaint in this regard with Banjara Hills police a year ago. “If the scared businessman paid, agents of the gang would have send the amount to their bosses in Dubai through ‘hawala’ transactions,” the DCP said. However, no person from Andhra Pradesh paid any amount to the gang till now, he added. Speaking to reporters later, Baba said that he only passed on information to mafia gangsters but was never associated with them in any serious crime. He claimed that he even acted as an informer to the Dubai police and helped the latter apprehend several offenders.
