Centre yet to clear legislators’ trip

300 legislators are scheduled to visit China in September
They will study development models in that country

BANGALORE: Legislative Assembly Speaker Krishna has said that the External Affairs Ministry has not yet cleared a trip to China by 300 legislators (225 MLAs and 75 MLCs) from the State.

Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, he said legislators would visit China in batches in September to study the progress achieved by that country and suggest improvements in development models adopted by the State. The proposal was still being processed and “we are pursuing the matter”, he said.

The foreign tour would help legislators “change their mindset” towards development projects and encourage them to take pro-development initiatives in the coming years. China had registered high growth in almost all sectors of the economy and the trip would help the legislators collect firsthand information about the models adopted by that country, he said. The trip would cost Rs. 6 crore.

Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa have said they will not be joining the tour.

Session

The next session of the legislature would be held from July 5 to 31. Twenty-one Bills would come up for discussion. The Assembly staff had received 765 questions on various subjects till July 3, Mr. Krishna said.
