“Undemocratic” protest decried

Staff Reporter

JNU Registrar recalls his days

NEW DELHI: Once an activist himself, Jawaharlal Nehru University Registrar Avais Ahmad, who has been associated with the university since 1971, said they never used “undemocratic” methods to prove any point contrary to the trend these days.

Talking to reporters on the sidelines of a press conference on Tuesday, Mr. Ahmad – who was gheraoed and illegally confined by the students on February 19 this year, an incident that resulted in the rustication of seven students – remarked that as the president of the JNU Staff Association in late 1970s, he too had disagreements with the university administration but never resorted to any “undemocratic” means to protest against any issue. “We always had a productive dialogue with the administration. If the administration thought our viewpoint was right, they conceded our demands. And if we felt that whatever they were saying was reasonable, we agreed with them,” said Mr. Ahmad.
