HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y.S.Rajasekhara Reddy on Tuesday gave a dressing down to Civil Supplies Minister Kasu Venkata Krishna Reddy and Marketing Minister M. Mareppa for failing to rein in the prices of essential commodities, including vegetable oils, pulses and vegetables. Expressing concern over the rising prices at a meeting convened by him, Dr. Reddy took the ministers and officials to task by asking “What are you doing? Are you not sensitive to these issues? Don’t you know the problems being faced by the common man today because of the rising prices of some of the essential commodities? Should you wait for me to call for a meeting and discuss theses issues and give you directions to act upon? Can’t you take necessary measures to arrest the prices of tomatoes, other vegetables, oils and pulses?” Mr. Venkata Krishna Reddy was at the receiving end of some caustic remarks by the Chief Minister a few weeks ago in New Delhi when he could not answer reporters’ queries about the quantum of additional kerosene he had sought from the Centre. According to an official release, Dr. Reddy said the rythu bazaars seem not to be selling vegetables and other commodities at reasonable prices and told the officials to immediately procure vegetables from other places and release in the market. He told the ministers and officials to act firmly to bring down the prices. He also asked them to conduct raids on hoarders and give him daily reports on the price situation. He was assured that the prices of tomatoes would come down in a few days. The Chief Minister also wanted onions, tamarind and oils to be sold at rythu bazaars at reasonable prices.
