Thiruvananthapuram: The proposed Salem railway division should be created by bifurcating the Madurai and Chennai railway divisions, Chairman, Standing Committee on Railways, Basudeb Acharia, MP, has said. Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday night, Mr. Acharia said there was no justification for the bifurcation of the Palakkad Railway Division for creating the Salem division. Mr. Acharia, who is here along with 18 MPs on a two-day official visit to the Thiruvananthapuram Railway Division to hold meetings with railway officials and inspect passenger amenities, said there were railway divisions in the country that had ‘much more length and loading’ than the Palakkad division. Once the Salem division is created by bifurcating Palakkad, the second railway division of Kerala will become ‘financially and operationally unviable.’
