Engineers told to ensure quality

Special Correspondent

Ponnala made in-charge of quality control mechanism

Minister for strengthening of quality control

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy has asked engineers and contractors to ensure “top-class quality” in construction of irrigation projects without giving any room for complaints.

The Chief Minister deliberated on the issue with senior officials at length here on Tuesday, in the light of various reports about sub-standard work turned out by some contractors.

He took a serious note of the breaches that occurred to some canals and projects, including Basavadoddi being executed as part of the Gururaghavendra Project.

Dr Reddy asked Major Irrigation Minister P. Lakshmaiah and senior officials to visit the projects under construction on a regular basis to ensure proper construction. Superintending engineers had been asked to inspect the constructions at least once in a week.

Onus on Ponnala

The Chief Minister made Mr Lakshmaiah, the “sole incharge” of the quality control mechanism, asking him to own responsibility for any sub-standard work detected. He wanted the present third-party quality control system to be strengthened and streamlined as a permanent mechanism.

“The third party quality control system should work effectively without attracting any criticism.”

Study of designs

Mr Lakshmaiah told reporters later that the third party quality control agencies were making a study of designs and specifications to suggest improvements and establish full-fledged central and mobile laboratories to undertake checks on the works.

The Minister said he would award severe punishment if any official was found responsible for sub-standard work.

He would immediately respond if any case of irregularity was brought to his notice.
