Bail for woman accused of child trafficking

BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday granted conditional bail to a social worker from Andhra Pradesh who is accused of fabricating documents relating to the birth of Lambani children and selling them.
The petitioner, Savitramma, claimed that she is a resident of Tandur in Ranga Reddy district in Andhra Pradesh and also the president of an institution for orphans. She claimed to be doing yeomen service to the orphans and said that there had been no complaints against her.
On March 23, 2001, Marvanibai lodged a complaint with the Chincholi police in Gulbarga district saying that her child, who was placed in the orphanage, had been sold. She alleged that the institution was fabricating documents about the birth of children and selling them.
The Chincholi police registered cases against Savitramma and arrested her.Savitramma said she was a green card holder of the U.S. and she would lose it if she did not visit the U.S. by September 2007.
Justice V. Jagannathan imposed stringent conditions on Savitramma and released her on bail.
