Power consumption dips in State

BAnGALORE: Power consumption in the State has decreased sharply due to heavy rain.

Daily consumption, which was hovering around 100 million units a couple of weeks ago, has dropped to 81.56 million units. It is basically due to reduction in consumption by irrigation pumpsets in rural areas. The reduction in consumption by air-conditioners and fans in urban areas has also contributed to the reduction in the State’s overall power consumption.

Rise in inflow

While there is reduction in power consumption, there is an increase in inflow into the hydel reservoirs.

Taking advantage of the situation, the Karnataka Power Corporation Limited has shut down most of its thermal power-generating units and running the hydel units in full steam. Of the seven generating units in the Raichur Thermal Power station (RTPS), five have been shut as the demand for power has decreased. Such a step was taken as hydel power is cheaper than thermal power, KPCL sources said.

In fact, six units of the RTPS was shut some days ago. However, generation by one more unit commenced on Tuesday.
