Record storage in Linganamakki since onset of monsoon

Cumulative inflow into the reservoir since June has crossed 12-year record

BANGALORE: Linganamakki reservoir, which is the State’s biggest hydel reservoir, has received record amount of water ever since the onset of the southwest monsoon.

Sources in the Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL) told The Hindu that cumulative inflow into the reservoir since the commencement of monsoon in June had surpassed a 12-year record.

The reservoir has received 42,509 million cubic feet (mcft) of water from June 1 to July 2.

The highest quantum of water received for this period earlier was 42,137 mcft recorded in 1994-95.

Last year, the reservoir received a total inflow of 25,462 mcft during the corresponding period.

At this stage, however, there is only a marginal increase in the reservoir’s water level compared with that of the previous year despite the record inflow. Last year, there was good storage in the reservoir when the monsoon commenced, sources said.

Water level in the Linganamakki reservoir stands at 1,780.5 feet as against the 1,779.35 feet during the corresponding period last year. The Full Reservoir Level (FRL) of Linganamakki is 1,819 feet.

Daily inflow

Officials are hopeful that the reservoir level would go up further if there is no decrease in the daily inflow for some more days.

It is not just Linganamakki that is seeing good inflow. The other two major hydel reservoirs of the State — Supa and Mani — have also seen increase in their water levels. In terms of cumulative inflow since June 1, the Supa reservoir has received 15,512 mcft of water inflow so far as against the 12,778 mcft during the corresponding period last year. Mani reservoir received cumulative inflow of 4,955 mcft since June 1 as against the 4,636 mcft during the corresponding period last year.

Water level in Supa has touched 533.23 metres as against 538.45 metres last year, and that of the Mani has touched 582.06 metres as against the last year’s level of 581.94 metres.

Capacity

In terms of percentage, water storage in Linganamakki is about 36.54 per cent of the total storage capacity of the reservoir against 35.28 per cent during the corresponding period last year.

Water levels in Supa and Mani have touched 31.43 per cent (40.09 per cent last year) and 35.33 per cent ( 38.47 per cent last year) of their total reservoir levels respectively.
